His father was a professor of languages and literature at the University of Giessen. His mother was the daughter of a Hessian nobleman. Hesse’s early childhood was spent in Giessen, where he received his primary education. In 1814, when he was ten years old, his family moved to Darmstadt. There he attended the Lyceum and, later, the Polytechnicum, from which he graduated in 1822.
After graduation, Hesse began his studies at the University of Heidelberg, where he met the poet Friedrich Hölderlin. Hesse and Hölderlin became close friends, and their relationship had a profound effect on Hesse’s life and work. In 1823, Hesse’s father died, and he was forced to interrupt his studies and return home to Darmstadt. He took a job as a tutor to support his mother and sister.
